Then she found out it was Jayne and even she, detached from the main story, got to have her "WTF Jayne?" scene. A smile crept across her face as she began to blush over the rugged nobility she was presuming Mal had displayed years ago. Her best moment though came when she automatically assumed that Mal had been the one who stole the money and gave it to the poor indentured workers. Mal and Inara were kept separate in this one as her story involved bedding the somber, bookish son of blustering Magistrate Higgins. By the end, the two of them sorted it all out and returned to being awkwardly flirtatious.

That is until he got the pulp beat out of him by a Jayne-hater named Stitch (Heat's Kevin Gage). Kaylee let his snobbish comments slide somewhat back in "Safe," but she was less forgiving here. Simon and Kaylee's budding relationship crept more into focus here too, with them bonding over several mugs of "Mudder's Milk" and then separating come morning after Simon put his "proper" foot in his mouth. Odd in its placement though, as it the tragic events at the end seemed to have a profound effect on Jayne, who'd still go on being only semi-loyal to Mal at best. And due to abundance of Jayne-worshipping, Mal had to alter his smuggling plans a bit. Likewise, Jayne's reaction to his newfound fame was equally excellent. Jayne's befuddlement mixed with everyone else's endless amusement was a killer combination.

Even building a statue of him in honor of the oft-praised "Hero of Canton." The reveal of that statue alone, along with the respective reactions from Mal, Simon, Kaylee, and Wash, is one of the show's most memorable, and joyful, moments. This time, Jayne was the butt of the joke as the scruffy looking nerfherder found out that a dirt-poor, mud-making town he once pulled a job in now considered him a Robin Hood-type folk hero.
